Tasted and proven: cheap zero cola is just as tasty as a leading brand

If you’re a child of the eighties, you probably still remember that advert: Pepsi Cola was compared with Coca-Cola in slick commercials. And the winner was… the sponsor of those commercials. That test has been repeated once more, this time to compare leading-brand and own-brand cola. And what does it show this time? Own-brand zero cola scores just as well – even slightly better.

The research by a specialised research agency was considerably more professional than those commercials: not with two glasses of cola at a market, but in a laboratory with test subjects. The leading-brand cola – let’s assume for the sake of the story that it was Coca-Cola Zero – scored 7 for taste, while First Choice Cola scored 7.2. Well, it’s simply tastier!

Science
It was approached scientifically, because the tasters assessed the cola’s colour and aroma, taste and degree of refreshment. They also rated drinkability, intensity of flavour, sweetness, acidity, amount of carbonation and aftertaste. And on all those fronts, there were only minor differences between the cheap cola and the leading brand.
