Temporarily delivered to your home: these are our favorites in Utrecht
During this insane coronavirus period, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily dining out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. Be sure to try them, because that way we can keep eating well and help the hospitality industry. These are the Utrecht favorites of the locals from time to momo.
Authentic Thai
Cheating a little right away: at Saowapa you can’t get delivery, but you can pick it up yourself. And whatever you choose, it’s all delicious. Truly authentic Thai dishes, such as pad thai, tom yam, noodles and curries, are freshly prepared by Thai women. Their Facebook page lists the five dishes of the day. There are always only two tables in the restaurant, so even outside the coronavirus crisis, Saowapa is mainly suitable for takeaway, as many Utrecht locals already know.
Fresher than fresh
DADO is a lovely address where you can pick up freshly prepared meals or have them delivered (via Deliveroo). You can choose a complete dinner, but they also have delicious tapas, salads and savory pies. They work with sustainable fish and seasonal and regional products as much as possible, so the menu changes with the seasons.
The most delicious hummus
Juuls Hummus is Utrecht’s very first hummus bar. And what a bar! At this food shop, you can pick up fresh, homemade hummus bowls. You can choose from a variety of toppings, such as fried eggplant, sautéed mushrooms and stewed meat. This is hummus the way you eat it in Israel, and you won’t find hummus anywhere more delicious! Tip: also try the shakshuka.

For pizza lovers
Craving pizza? Then wood-fired pizzeria Bastacosi is the right place for you. Or rather: places, because there are now three locations in Utrecht. You can have your pizza (small or regular size) delivered to your home via Uber Eats or pick it up yourself. For now, the latter is only possible at the location on Biltstraat (and from Wednesday through Sunday). Place your order at the bar, grab a drink from the fridge yourself and take a seat while your pizza is put into the wood-fired oven. As soon as you hear your name, your pizza is ready and you can collect your order. Can’t choose? Go for the Pizza Funghi con pancetta. A delicious pizza with mushrooms, pecorino, pancetta, buffalo mozzarella and olives.
