Anyone who visited Horecava this year couldn’t miss it: the huge range of new vegan products. These are the eight most notable vegan innovations from Horecava 2020.

Vegan Brabant sausage rolls

Okay, for some people it takes a little getting used to. Their Brabant ‘sausage rolls’ goes vegan? At Brabantsche Worstenbroodjes, they sell the ultimate vegetarian sausage roll, made with the same spice mix as the regular Brabantsche sausage rolls, making you wonder whether it really is vegetarian. The vegetarian sausage rolls are filled with plant-based proteins and contain absolutely no animal products. 100% vegan, in other words!

Plant-based fries sauce

Remia has been making strides with plant-based mayonnaise for a while now and has also added an egg-free fries sauce for the hospitality industry. “A portion of fries with vegan fries sauce, please” is suddenly a perfectly normal snack-bar request.

Vish sticks

No, it’s not a spelling mistake: Vish sticks, with the ‘v’ as a wink to vegan. Visitors to Horecava especially enjoyed the crispy coating and well-balanced fish flavour. The sticks and nuggets will be launched soon, together with a vegan ravigote sauce specially developed for them.

Truffle Sauce by Willicroft

The vegan cheese brand Willicroft already surprised us with its vegan cheese fondueThis is Not Cheese Fondue. The fondue, based on fermented cashews, is creamy and has the characteristic sharpness of real cheese. Now a delicious vegan truffle sauce, This Is Not Truffle Sauce, has also been added to the range. Perfect for dipping your (vegetable) chips! You can buy Willicroft products at the first vegan cheese shop in the Netherlands.

Beyond Sausage

The Beyond Burger was, without a doubt, the most hyped piece of ‘meat’ of the past year. Producer Beyond Meat was the first to manage to get a 100% plant-based burger into the meat aisle (!) and became a hit on the stock market. The next big thing? That is undoubtedly the Beyond Sausage.

Vegan apple pie

During the previous Horecava, producer BEUK received a great deal of demand for vegan apple pie, and its pastry chefs got straight to work. The vegan apple pie is made with Viennese pastry (without egg) and filled with fresh apple wedges, sugar and cinnamon. Even better: the almond pieces on top. In the meantime, they are already working on their next vegan product: a vegan Tyrolean apple strudel. Gemütlich!

No Pork Burger

We already wrote enthusiastically about the bloody good vegan burger from Moving Mountain. The meat substitutes from this plant-based food pioneer are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. But alongside chicken- and beef-based meat substitutes, Moving Mountains is now focusing on imitating pork with the No Pork Burger. And it tastes so authentic that it even fools butchers!

Vegan Masters

As a delivery service, Vegan Masters is a somewhat odd one out in this list of vegan innovations. It isn’t an edible product, but it is the first company to focus entirely on home delivery of vegan meals.
