These are the most striking foods Dutch people take on holiday

There’s nothing better than going on holiday and eating lots of fun, new and special things you don’t have at home. Right? Well, according to some people, that’s not quite how it works. They prefer to take as many food products from home as possible. And some things we find pretty bizarre… They thought so themselves (in hindsight), too, so we promised to leave out the names of our colleagues, friends and family. And my own – the shame is real.

Dutch people on holiday: a whole suitcase full

Can’t you go on holiday without a bag of liquorice or stroopwafels either? You’re not the only one; apparently, one in three Dutch people suffers from this and fills their suitcase with products from the Dutch supermarket. Cheese, liquorice, coffee, peanut butter, but even tea is dragged along from home. Even Zaanse mayo gets checked in!

My life, my sauce

‘I know it’s not exactly normal, but I don’t go on holiday without satay sauce. I prefer to eat it with everything, wherever I am. I even dip chicken wings in this divinely warm sauce. A tub of ready-made Wijko (with the spicy one as my favourite) always goes into my suitcase, wherever I’m going on holiday. No comments pls, my life, my sauce!’

Have you ever tasted anything this salty?

‘Wow, I really love salt. And especially Wadden herb salt. This seasoning has been at the front of my spice cupboard for years. The combination of salt and herbs is truly heavenly and makes every egg in every country taste better. An added benefit: it weighs nothing.’

No home without tea

‘My boyfriend ALWAYS takes enough bags of Pickwick Ceylon tea (one-cup bags) with him when he goes abroad. That’s his coffee, so I understand it. No other tea gives him the feeling that he can start the day. I suspect he’d even take this tea with him to Ceylon…’

No holiday without peanut butter

‘You didn’t think I’d go on holiday without a jar of peanut butter, did you? Of course not, never leave home without it. Last holiday it even came with me to Greece. Strange? Maybe. But still: you should know how often other guests asked if they could have some too…’

Taking cheese to the land of cheese

‘I once got to go to France with my girlfriend’s parents, and they had brought some cheese. A whole one. To France… Because they don’t have cheese there. Anyway. I thought it was very tasty cheese, and I was allowed to put exactly one slice on a sandwich every morning. No more; her father carefully rationed the piece of cheese.’

A suitcase full of apple sauce

‘No matter how hard I try, it all fails. My children really eat apple sauce with everything. Even with frikandels and lasagna, the jar comes out. Going on holiday without it is therefore an outright nightmare. Since then, a suitcase full of jars is checked in separately.’

The pride of Zaan

‘The distinctive tube of Zaanse Mayo is always in my fridge, and therefore also in my suitcase when I go on holiday. Because, let’s be honest, no other mayo beats the Zaanse! Delicious on a tomato, an egg, a toasted sandwich, on what isn’t it good, really?’
