This Is the Best Way to Store Peanut Butter

Some people have rather strange eating habits. How about a celery stick smothered in peanut butter? You have to be a fan. I’ll take an old-fashioned slice of bread with peanut butter, or a spoonful straight from the jar. Speaking of peanut butter jars: is it better to store them in the refrigerator or not?

Anyone who thought you could put that bulb of garlic in the fruit bowl next to the bananas, or keep ketchup outside the refrigerator, is mistaken. If you want everything to stay tasty for just a little longer—and last longer too—you need to pay enough attention to storing food and drinks. That includes your jar of peanut butter.
Storing peanut butter
Peanut butter is one of those sandwich spreads that keeps for quite a while. That’s because peanut butter mainly consists of fat from the peanuts and has a low moisture content. Bacteria love moisture. The less moisture there is, the lower the chance of mold.
But where should you store it—in the refrigerator or pantry? If you eat a slice of bread with peanut butter every day and finish the jar within 2 to 3 months, storing it in the refrigerator isn’t urgently necessary. If you don’t eat the creamy spread on bread but use it in the kitchen for this peanut butter bread or peanut butter chocolate fudge (and therefore take longer than 2 to 3 months to finish the jar), it’s wise to put the jar in the refrigerator. Your peanut butter will then stay good for at least 6 to 9 months.
