Today is World Food Day: watch the online live show

Nearly 690 million people go to bed hungry every day—that’s 10 million more than last year and 60 million more than in 2014. In addition, there are another 2 billion people for whom a meal containing sufficient, healthy and sustainable food is not a given. World Food Day is an opportunity to give this issue extra attention.

World Food Day, an initiative of the United Nations (1979), is intended to keep awareness of the issue of hunger alive. The ultimate goal? Working towards #zerohunger by 2030. In previous years, this was always a major event—which of course isn’t possible because of coronavirus—but Food Cabinet (the campaign agency working towards a food system with a future) and the Netherlands Food Partnership have come up with a creative solution. Today, October 16, they are broadcasting a (free) online live show, featuring interesting guests.
Pandemic = even more hunger
Coronavirus is making it painfully clear once again how vulnerable food systems are worldwide, because the crisis has caused an increase in hunger and food insecurity in many parts of the world. Jobs have disappeared, food producers are still under pressure and food chains have been disrupted by measures to prevent the spread of the virus. In the Netherlands, for example, the crisis has led to initiatives such as the Live-eat charity dinner and the Red Cross aid campaign.
Showtime!
During the show, presenters Helen Kranstauber and Ikenna Azuike will take the audience through the food-related problems occurring around the world, such as malnutrition and its causes, obesity caused by unhealthy eating, and healthy and unhealthy forms of agriculture. Here’s a selection of what you can expect during the live show:
Live cooking show
Chef Vanja van der Leeden has been rocking the culinary landscape for years as a chef and writer. Her cookbook ‘Indorock’ was named the Golden Cookbook of 2019. During the World Food Day Show, she will cook a delicious Indonesian dish live, with a local twist.
