Vegan sausage rolls swiftly disappear from Transavia’s offering again: one big flop
Since the end of 2023, Transavia had been selling vegetarian sausage rolls on board its flights. But the vegan snack has already swiftly disappeared from the offering again. There was far too little demand from passengers, while the sausage rolls with meat were being sold continuously.
For comparison: Transavia sold at least 15,000 to 20,000 sausage rolls with meat every month. A spokesperson for the airline tells AD that they ”didn’t come anywhere near that” with the vegan version.
So sustainability takes a back seat, then?
The vegan sausage rolls you could buy on board Transavia came from Unilever’s Vegetarian Butcher. It may well be the best-known producer of vegetarian products in the Netherlands. Even so, the vegan snacks clearly did not go down well with Transavia passengers.
Why did the airline make the rather remarkable move of switching entirely to vegan sausage rolls at the end of 2023? In any case, it fits with Schiphol’s ambitious policy: the airport wants 60% of its food and dairy offering to be plant-based by 2030. In this way, they hope to reduce CO2 emissions—which are, after all, enormous at the airport. The decision to remove the vegan sausage rolls from the range again therefore does not entirely fit with Schiphol’s ambition. But then again, what else are you supposed to do with boxes of untouched snacks slowly going to waste? A Transavia spokesperson tells AD that throwing them away is not exactly sustainable either. Well then.
Let people decide for themselves
We have seen before that vegan versions of originally meat-based products do not always go down well. Think of the vegan sausage roll from Jumbo, which Snackspert absolutely loathed. Or the series of vegan smoked sausages released in recent years, most of which received decidedly harsh reactions. And remember how people even got angry about McDonald’s Meatless McKroket?
On NU.nl, most people seem to understand that the vegan sausage rolls are disappearing from Transavia. Many mainly dislike the fact that the vegan snacks were imposed on them. ”I really hate having all kinds of things forced on me. This is one of them” and ”We’re increasingly being pushed in a direction that most of us simply don’t want. I decide for myself what I eat and drink,” are some of the comments.
The Blijdorp trick
The tactics used by Blijdorp Zoo are also mentioned in the reactions on NU.nl. Its ‘regular’ croquette turned out to have been vegan all along three years after its introduction. ”They should have introduced it the way Blijdorp did with its croquettes. They simply introduced vegetarian croquettes, and nobody complained. Years later, they announced that they had switched.” An idea for the next vegan transformation plan?
