What will be on the menu in 2040?
Where will our food come from in 2040, and what will it taste like? Will we have a shake of vitamins and proteins for breakfast in the future? Will we be eating a sandwich with insects for lunch and lab-grown meat goulash for dinner? Will people even still eat meat?
VPRO Tegenlicht: Future Food
Will we soon feed 9 billion people with plant-based proteins, or will we stick to something that tastes like meat? An important and relevant question, because the limits of the global food system have been reached. The climate and our health are suffering under the current food production system, which cannot feed everyone and is exhausting the planet. Friend and foe agree that something needs to change. The only question is: how on earth? VPRO Tegenlicht is trying to find the answer to this pressing question.
Short and circular supply chains
One important movement is primarily focused on locally produced food. Short and circular supply chains from producer to consumer, with potatoes that never travel more than 20 kilometres and animals that only eat the leftovers from the food system. Is this a realistic scenario that will allow us to feed 9 billion people in the future? Or is that only possible with technological innovation and food that comes from the lab?

A diet of plant-based proteins?
Should we switch to a diet consisting mainly of plant-based proteins? Animal proteins are inefficient and put a heavy burden on the environment. Whether that switch will happen is a matter of taste. More than 70% of people in the Netherlands still enjoy their familiar meat, vegetables and potatoes. But the difference between a hamburger made from 100% beef and one made from 100% plant-based ingredients is disappearing (do you remember the ‘bleeding’ vegan burger?) Is it a matter of taste or time?
