Where to Find the Best Speculaas in Your Province
With December approaching, we’re once again kicking off the snacking season with much fanfare. Can you—not unlike yours truly—resist speculaas? I’ll tell you where to find the very best speculaas in your province. And no, that’s not just my opinion. These are the winners of the annual Beko Speculaaskeuring.
Every year, Beko Coöperatie chooses the best speculaas bakers in the country. They do so in three categories: speculaas without almonds, speculaas with almonds, and gevulde speculaas. The winner of each category may call themselves the ‘best speculaas baker in the Netherlands’ for a year. But that’s not all: they also choose the best speculaas in each province. So you’ll know where to get the very tastiest speculaas biscuits close to home.
Speculaas tastier than last year
The best speculaas was chosen by a professional and consumer jury. Talk about a dream job… The professional jury tasted the speculaas completely blind, while the consumers were allowed to see the packaging. Notably, higher scores were awarded than the year before. In other words, this year’s speculaas was considered tastier than last year’s. That bodes very well.
3 best speculaas bakers in the Netherlands
Of course, the speculaas bakers only want one prize: the best in the country. This year, Echte Bakker Herman Schepers from Sleen, Drenthe, took home the prize for best speculaas without almonds. Its speculaas received a score of 8.13. The best speculaas with almonds comes from Koopmans Bakkerij Patisserie Chocolaterie in Tubbergen, Overijssel. The professional and consumer jury gave its baking an 8.6. And the best gevulde speculaas? That comes from Banketbakkerij Maison Pierre in Amersfoort. This speculaas received an average score of 8.28 from the juries.
