With Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam’s Super Chic Afternoon Tea, You’ll Imagine Yourself in the Caribbean

Summer in the Caribbean Afternoon Tea – Jan-Kees Steenman – July 2022

There is a new edition of the renowned Afternoon Tea at Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. And this delicious late-summer edition pays tribute to the Caribbean. Executive Chef Sidney Schutte and Pastry Chef Vipin Charly immerse themselves in tropical vibes and treat you to beautiful sweet and savoury bites featuring Caribbean ingredients.

The Waldorf’s Afternoon Tea is known as the most beautiful in the capital. Each individual bite is a work of art in its own right and sometimes almost too beautiful to eat. This edition is stunning once again and begins with a tropical mocktail.

6 sweet and 6 savoury

The culinary journey to the Caribbean begins with a miniature aloe vera cracker with lobster, flowers and pink salt, followed by a small arepa (these versatile corn breads are eaten throughout the day in Venezuela) with smoked mackerel and bell pepper. There are also stops featuring the spicy sauce Pica de Papaya and a small sandwich with goat curry, coconut and cucumber. All beautiful and delicious bites.

The sweet treats, once again six in total, range from an exotic opera cake with—there it is again—a hint of aloe vera to a coconut-lime sphere with rum and dark chocolate.

Flamingos

They roam every Caribbean island: flamingos. This beautiful bird is the inspiration for the prettiest and also the most delicious dish in the Afternoon Tea: flamingos made from a vanilla, coconut and rose choux pastry.

Two different teas are served with the beautiful bites. Green tea accompanies the sweet bites, while rooibos is served with the savoury bites. You finish with the famous scones from the Waldorf: wonderfully delicious British bakes, somewhere between a little cake and a bread roll. Three toppings are served with them, inspired by Dutch apple pie and tompouce: apple compote, mango cream and a vanilla spread with pastry cream.

Until the end of September

The Afternoon Tea is available until the end of September 2022 and is served from Wednesday through Sunday in the Peacock Alley from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for €60.50 per person.
