6 surprising things you can do with bacon

You probably eat bacon with fried eggs. Maybe you sometimes put it on a pancake, and when you’re feeling creative, in a toasted sandwich. Think outside the box! You can do much more with bacon than you think. Here are 6 oh-yeah ideas for bacon.

Tip: also check out the most common mistakes when preparing bacon. After all, a good start is half the battle (but a good start is only half, according to De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig).
Combine bacon with fruit
It sounds a little like letting the devil kiss an angel: fatty bacon with a healthy piece of fruit. Still, we recommend embracing this rebellious idea. Because it creates flavor explosions that will have you saying “wow.” Just think about it: sweet and salty combine fantastically, bringing each other into balance. And that’s exactly what salty bacon and sweet fruit do together. We previously recommended pineapple bacon bites from the air fryer, as well as figs with bacon. Also try bacon-wrapped dates. Twenty minutes on a baking sheet in the oven (at 200 °C) and you’ll have a delicious crispy, sweet-and-salty snack to serve with drinks.
Turn it into jam
Smoky, sweet and mildly spicy: that’s bacon jam. Believe me, you’ll want to keep this in your fridge as a standard item. Try replacing the usual fig jam on your cheese board with it. Or simply spread it on your bread. Why not? You know the texture of jam, and you may already eat bacon more often as part of your breakfast (if you’re an English-breakfast fan, that is). Nice: making bacon jam is easy, too.
Turn it into a crumble
We recently gave you a list of ingredients that make your soup incredibly delicious. You can add to that list, because bacon absolutely belongs there too. Fry the bacon, let it dry thoroughly and then turn it into a crumble to sprinkle over your soup. It gives your soup something crunchy and salty. Tip: your soup won’t need as much salt if you top it with a salty bacon crumble.
Surprising snack with drinks: shrimp in a bacon jacket
We often find combining meat and fish a little daring. We do sometimes see surf & turf on menus, but meat-and-fish combinations don’t tend to appear at Friday afternoon drinks. Even though you can really make something surprising with them! For example, try shrimp in a bacon jacket. The sweet, tender, fishy flavor of the shrimp combines well with the salty, crispy bacon. Fry your bacon first and let it cool slightly. Then cut the bacon strips in half and wrap each strip around a shrimp; a toothpick will help keep them together. Put the bacon-wrapped shrimp back in the bacon pan and fry them for another 8 minutes or so. Delicious with a chili dipping sauce. Also delicious in a bacon jacket: dates wrapped in bacon and baked in the oven. Once again, it’s the sweet and salty combination that makes this irresistibly delicious.
Add crispy bacon to your Mac and Cheese
It may be the ultimate comfort food: Mac and Cheese. Crispy bacon is exactly what this cheesy dish needs. It adds a delicious crunch to the soft bite of macaroni and cheese. We think this Fleetwood Mac and Cheese is fantastic—both in name and as a dish. Add pieces of crispy bacon yourself and you’ll have a comfort dish that feels like a warm hug on a rainy winter day.
Dip your bacon in chocolate
Um, what? Yes, really. Just try it, and you’ll immediately understand why. Once again, sweet and salty is heavenly. It’s also a delicious snack you can eat straight out of hand. Want next-level bacon with chocolate? Then make these Bacon-Weave s’mores. A kind of bacon toasted sandwich with marshmallows and chocolate in between. Well… I don’t think you need any more explanation.
