7x restaurant staff got subtly even with annoying customers
Do you complain about your order? Do you try to get a discount even though you’re not entitled to one? Or – even worse – are you rude and crude to restaurant staff? Watch out, because hospitality workers have their own methods of getting revenge. Not by spitting in your cappuccino, no, it can be much more subtle than that. Just read these seven examples.
On the online platform Reddit, hospitality workers responded en masse to the question: ‘What do you do when a customer is rude?’ The responses came pouring in: food dragged across the floor, shoes scraped clean above a milkshake and even licked slices of cheese placed on a sandwich—the staff’s revenge was extensive. But some servers and chefs took a more subtle approach.
Well done
‘One of our guests is always rude. I really don’t like him. So I always cook his eggs for far too long. Completely well done, dry and tough. Enjoy your meal!’
Cut it yourself
‘I worked as a pizza delivery driver. If I had to deliver to someone who never tipped, I would cut their pizza into slices, but not quite all the way through.’
Is that enough?
‘A woman asked for extra mayonnaise. I put a ridiculous amount of mayonnaise on her food. She must have thought I’d forgotten “I’ll pray for you as a tip”—not a chance.’
Am I seeing that right?
‘I never deliberately ruined anyone’s food or did anything disgusting to it. But I always got a lot of pleasure out of plating the dishes for guests who were unpleasant. I’d make sure it looked like a penis or something.’
No kick
‘Years ago, when I worked as a barista, I made annoying guests’ coffee with decaf instead of our regular coffee.’
Mind game
‘The best way to get even with an annoying guest was something I saw at a fast-food restaurant where I worked. My colleague did: nothing. And that was precisely the beauty of it. A notorious guest ordered his meal, my colleague gathered it on a tray, walked into the kitchen with the order in a conspicuous manner and came straight back out. With a broad grin, he handed the order to the guest: here you go! We saw that the guest didn’t trust it and immediately threw his order in the trash outside.’
Ugly ice cream
‘My colleague always made very ugly, sloppy sundaes for annoying guests. If she liked the guests, she made the sundaes just as beautiful as in the advertisements, with extra whipped cream and lots of extra decorations.’
