Big news from McDonald’s: they’re launching McPlant

Meat substitutes have been one of the most important food trends of the past few years. More and more companies have introduced new plant-based products that taste like meat, such as the Juicy Blood Burger from Moving Mountains and the Next Level Meat burger from Lidl. McDonald’s is also getting into meat substitutes. Next year, they will launch their new ‘McPlant’ products.

More and more vegetarian options

The fact that they are bringing more and more vegetarian products to the market is nothing new; the fast-food chain has been offering plant-based versions of its snacks for some time now. Since 2019, five vegetarian products have already been launched, such as the Veggie Nuggets, the Veggie McKroket and the Veggie Homestyle Crispy Chicken. But the fast-food chain has announced that it will continue to innovate and develop and produce its own meat substitutes for chicken and the meat in breakfast sandwiches.

No collaboration

Good news for all vegetarian Maccie fans, then, but bad news for plant-based meat producer Beyond Meat, whose stock immediately plunged on the exchange following the announcement. In addition to its collaborations with, among others, Vegan Junkfood Bar, Cannibale Royale and Subway, they had hoped to work with McDonald’s, just as competitor Impossible Foods is doing with Burger King for the Vegan Whopper.

The 2021 menu

The items on the new McPlant menu will be available to order in several countries next year. Exactly which countries those are remains a secret for now…
