I Tried Jumbo’s Pizza Sausage Roll (!) and This Is What I Thought
Feel free to wake me up in the middle of the night for a pizza with fennel sausage and chili peppers or the tastiest sausage roll in all of Brabant. Because pizza: delicious! And sausage rolls, also delectable! But combining the two… A good idea or revolting? I put the new Jumbo Pizza Sausage Roll to the test.
Jumbo isn’t averse to experimenting a little here and there and pushing the boundaries of what’s culinarily acceptable. For example, I recently bought the pancake custard (yes, you read that right) and had already bravely made my way through the frikandel speciaal salad. Yes, you read that correctly too: frikandel speciaal salad.
Poor Italians… bewildered Brabanders…
While Italians aren’t exactly thrilled by Hawaiian pizza and the people of Brabant champion traditional sausage rolls, the supermarket doesn’t seem to care all that much. A pizza with sausage rolls—why not, they must have thought in a moment of madness. Or were they simply very drunk during the brainstorm for Jumbo’s 100th anniversary? Who can say.
Pizza Sausage Roll, then
As idiotic as the combination may be, of course it had to be tasted. The Pizza Sausage Roll has a reasonably firm base and is topped with (far too little) tomato sauce, (far too little) cheese, (far too little) bacon bits and, naturally, Brabant’s number-one delicacy. You can tell that no experienced pizza maker was involved by the way the tomato sauce has been spread over one half while the other has to go without. Still, it went into the oven without any extra sauce or cheese.
Absolutely disgusting or a golden combination?
The first bite was not a success. The Pizza Sausage Roll may be a party-piece, but it has very little flavor and is bone-dry. The Pizza Sausage Roll is mainly a lot of dough with an occasional hint of tomato or cheese. The mini sausage rolls are reasonably okay, but so dry that they don’t tempt you to have a second piece.
The pizza comes with a packet of curry sauce, and that’s a good thing (though it’s also pretty disgusting), because at least it adds some flavor. My verdict, therefore: fun stunt, but a lousy execution. Want to try it yourself? The Pizza Sausage Roll is currently available at Jumbo for €5.
