It’s American Week at Lidl: These 10 Standout Products You’ll Want to Buy If You Want to Gain Weight

America is known for many things, but not exactly for having a particularly healthy food culture. The fact that 40% of American children think that hot dogs, burgers and bacon are types of vegetables says enough. But hey… A hamburger dripping with fat and an incredibly sweet cheesecake are irresistible to many people. Agree? Run to Lidl, then, because American Week has started there.

The supermarket is offering no fewer than 50 American-style products. We’re picking out the most notable ones. And only then will you truly understand why obesity is such a major problem on the other side of the ocean.
1. Corn dogs
Corn dogs are a kind of hot dog with a crispy deep-fried cornmeal coating around it. To me, this is the ultimate American snack. It immediately reminds me of the kind of fairs you see in the film Grease; the savory version of cotton candy. At Lidl, they’re available with a spicy tomato dip included. You don’t have to make the batter yourself. They come ready-made in the package!

2. Breaded mozzarella
If you feel like having a heated discussion with an Italian, serve them this breaded mozzarella. To me, this is a little bit better, a little bit worse. Do you really need to tamper with a magnificent product like mozzarella? I doubt it. On the other hand, I always like things in a crispy coating. Fine, we’ll just have to try it—if we’re to believe the Americans, it’s amazing.

3. Pizza bagels
They remind us a little of the pizza donuts that were on Lidl’s shelves a while ago. We thought those were—shamefully but truly—pretty tasty, so we have a good feeling about these pizza bagels. Except once we’ve eaten them.

4. XXL cotton candy
Is your dentist reading this? No? Good. With this bucket of cotton candy, I’d start organizing the funeral for your tooth enamel right away. You can say bye bye to it irrevocably. It’s outrageous that something like this is on the shelves, but if you can’t resist your curiosity, here you go.

5. Rocky Road cups
Another thing that will give you cavities just by looking at it: Rocky Road cups. The American sweethearts know what they’re doing. You don’t have to make the chocolate cups with chopped cookies, marshmallows and dried fruit pieces yourself anymore; at Lidl, they’re ready to eat on the shelves.

6. Cookie dough
‘‘Don’t eat too much of that raw dough, it’s guaranteed to give you a stomachache!’ was something I always heard when we baked cookies at home. Americans don’t care about that. In fact, they’ve turned eating cookie dough into a kind of trademark. Lidl is happily joining the hype and offers you a tub of ready-to-eat cookie dough.

7. Chicago-style pizza
I studied in Canada for a while and also visited many places in the United States. Chicago was one of them. There, I ate deep-dish pizza: thick, filled pizza. Curious what it tastes like from the supermarket? A trip to Lidl will do the trick.

8. Deep-fried chicken rings
I knew deep-fried onion rings—you can also get those at Lidl this week!—but deep-fried chicken rings are new to me. Not much can go wrong here—unless you take your health seriously. These chicken nuggets in ring form, with a chili cheese dip on the side… Hungover as a branch? Here’s your answer.

9. Toaster Tarts
We have Sultana; in America, they have Toaster Tarts—also known as Pop-Tarts. It’s not exactly customary here to put a Sultana in the toaster. With Toaster Tarts, that is the intention, although you can also eat them as they are. The pastries are incredibly sweet. They’re filled with chocolate or strawberry filling and topped with a layer of sugary icing. If this doesn’t give you a sugar rush , I don’t know what will. (Although: Sultanas do that just as well.)

10. New York-style cheesecake
Of course, cheesecake cannot be missing during an American week like this. Making a truly good cheesecake yourself is difficult, and you simply don’t always feel like doing it. This ready-made cheesecake satisfies your cravings for sugar just as well, and all you have to do is slice it.
