McDonald’s reopens in Moscow

Just a few weeks ago, the golden arches were removed from Russia with much fanfare because McDonald’s closed all its Russian locations in protest against the war in Ukraine. But last weekend, people were once again able to enjoy a hamburger at the reopened restaurants.

The fast-food chain did indeed close its restaurants in Russia, writes NRC. The establishments were taken over by a Russian coal billionaire, on the condition that he reopen the restaurants under his own branding. That happened last weekend: the new old McDonald’s restaurants are now called Vkoesno i tosjka, translated as: Tasty, period. The logo is now green and red instead of the famous golden M.
Same taste
‘The name has changed, but the taste is the same,’ reads a banner at one of the restaurants. The McFlurry has been removed from the menu, as have the Big Mac and the Big Tasty. A Big Mac is now called a Double Burger at ‘Tasty, period’, and the Quarter Pounder is a Grand. The hamburgers are now saltier and somewhat mushier, say people who have tasted them.
Buying them back
Apparently, McDonald’s is counting on the war in Ukraine not lasting too long, so that it can once again flip burgers in Russia. The restaurants were sold with a striking provision: within fifteen years, McDonald’s has the right to buy its establishments back.
