Miss Worst Contest – and 19 more weird beauty pageants from the fifties

Miss World, Miss Universe – famous beauty pageants. In the fifties, a beauty pageant seems to have been organised every other minute, judging by these photos. In America, beautiful girls could also be crowned Miss Sausage, Miss Doughnut and Miss Blueberry.

The first American beauty pageant took place in 1921. Margaret Gorman was the very first winner ever; she poses with an American flag, her hair styled in beautiful curls, wearing a relaxed, loose-fitting dress. A revolution, because until then many women wore corsets, and laughing broadly in a photo with their hair loose was really not customary. What did a beauty queen have to do? Wave, wave a lot, and cut ribbons; a beauty queen was primarily there for publicity. That probably also explains the Miss Wine and Miss Fish contests…
It all seems to come from another era, because of those black-and-white photos and those lovely faces without a trace of Botox. But did you know that a Wine Queen is still crowned every year in Germany? Retro!
