No Dutch chef in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 have been announced. Once again, it has turned into a mouthwatering list. A small disappointment: there are no Dutch chefs in the list of the 50 best restaurants in the world.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, is one of the biggest culinary events worldwide and takes place in a different city each time. Top chefs from all over the world gathered in Antwerp this time; the city was supposed to be the host city last year, but this was unavoidably postponed because of the coronavirus.
Culinary experts worldwide
The list of The World’s 50 Best is not compiled by restaurant critics or Michelin inspectors, by the way, but by culinary experts from all over the world, affiliated with the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, who are allowed to cast their vote.
And the winner is…
They named restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, headed by chef René Redzepi, number 1 of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. What a great year for Noma; they recently also received their long-awaited third Michelin star. Noma succeeds the French restaurant Mirazur, headed by chef Mauro Colagreco, which won the 2019 edition of The World’s 50 Best – the year in which Noma, incidentally, came second. As mentioned, there was no 50 Best edition in 2020 because of the coronavirus.
Second place goes to restaurant Geranium, also in Copenhagen, and third place to restaurant Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, Spain. You can find the full list here.
No Dutch chefs
Unlike previous years, there were no Dutch chefs in the list this year. In the second part of the list, the so-called 50Next, or positions 51 through 100, there were three Dutch chefs. The highest-ranking Dutch chef is Nick Bril of Antwerp restaurant The Jane, in 66th place. In 69th place is the three-Michelin-starred restaurant De Librije, run by Jonnie & Thérèse Boer. The final name on the list is Dutch chef Richard Ekkebus, who runs the kitchen at restaurant Amber in Hong Kong.
