Rude restaurant Karen’s Diner now also in Hoofddorp and Leeuwarden
Short, spicy haircut and always wanting to speak to the manager. That’s Karen: a middle-aged woman who is al-ways complaining about everything and everyone. The phenomenon comes from America, where someone named Karen is now looked at with pity—or, if she really is a Karen: intense irritation. Karen inspired Karen’s Diner, with locations worldwide. There was already a pop-up restaurant in Amsterdam, which is now also temporarily stopping in Hoofddorp and Leeuwarden.
The residents of Hoofddorp and Leeuwarden had better brace themselves. A visit to Karen’s Diner can hardly be called enjoyable. You are deliberately treated incredibly rudely. Have a question? Tsss… Shut up. Here, you shouldn’t be afraid to take a silly remark. And your food? It is just barely not thrown onto your table. Here, with your big, fat cheeseburger.
From Australia to Europe
The phenomenon Karen’s Diner originally comes from Australia. There, it operates as a permanent restaurant in various locations, including Sydney and Adelaide. Dinners at Karen’s are such a success there that they have also made their way to Europe. And therefore to the Netherlands too! Karen comes here as a pop-up. That means that after a while—boohoo or thank god?—we will have to say goodbye to her again. On October 14 and 15, you can eat at Karen’s at Fort Noxx in Hoofddorp; on November 4 and 5, you can take a seat at FIZZ in Leeuwarden.
50’s diner
Now you may be wondering: why on earth would I let myself be berated during an evening out for dinner? Well, because it’s simply a fun experience. But also because Karen’s food is genuinely very tasty. Think of a traditional American diner, with pink milkshakes and fully loaded burgers. The Karens themselves wear typical American 50’s diner uniforms. You could almost call it cute, until they open their mouths.
