Scary: Monique nearly choked to death on a frikandel

As true frikandel fans, we’re happy to highlight all the positive sides of our favorite snack. How versatile the frikandel is, for example, or how sustainable it is. But we have to be honest: eating a frikandel is not without danger. Monique experienced that in a disturbing way last weekend. During dinner, a piece of frikandel got stuck in her throat, and it nearly cost her her life.

The storm is howling around the house on Friday evening, while inside Corné and his wife Monique are enjoying a cozy dinner of fries and a frikandel. But then things go wrong: a piece of frikandel gets stuck in Monique’s throat. She can no longer breathe, Corné tries to help her but doesn’t seem to succeed, and Monique collapses unconscious on the floor. Terrifying, right?
Overloaded
Corné tries to reach the emergency services by calling 112, but the phone line is overloaded. Many people are calling about storm damage, so Corné can’t get through to the emergency services. When he calls the out-of-hours GP service as well, he hears a recorded message.
Life-threatening
Fortunately, it all ends well. The frikandel comes loose, and Monique can breathe again. The Heimlich maneuver Corné tried probably worked after all. But the couple is still badly shaken. ‘In a life-threatening situation, you should simply be able to get someone on the phone,’ says Corné. ‘Because this could have ended badly.’
