Stroopwafel from the wall? Come to Gouda

Stroopwafel-Favorflav

The vending machine is typically Dutch; the most popular vending machine was FEBO’s on Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam. And now, as an innovative people, we’re taking that wonderful invention to the next level, with the largest wall in the world from which you can pull stroopwafels. And that stroopwafel wall will soon stand in the stroopwafel capital of the world: Gouda.

That ‘food from the wall’ has really taken off during the coronavirus era, for example with the lobster croquettes and asparagus croquettes from Olivijn, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Haarlem. De Nieuwe Polderkeuken in Stolwijk also opened a culinary vending machine, with a crayfish hot dog and bitterballen with Stolwijk cheese.

286 compartments

Martin and Martijn Markus of Stroopwafelbakkerij Markus in Gouda realised that you can pull much more than just special snacks and diagonal snacks from such a wall. They set up a stroopwafel wall in Waddinxveen, and it was a great success. Not surprising; the Gouda stroopwafel may well be the Netherlands’ best-known cookie—the first stroopwafel with its characteristic diamond pattern was made in Gouda in 1810.

When a larger location became available in central Gouda, they didn’t hesitate for a moment. The new stroopwafel wall will be the largest stroopwafel wall in the world, with 286 compartments full of stroopwafels. For now, the brothers are counting on the people of Gouda to empty the wall, but after the lockdown measures, tourists will also be very welcome to pull a tin of cookies from the wall here.

Tip: warm your stroopwafel in the microwave for 5 seconds or place the waffle on top of a cup of coffee. Finger-licking good!
