The bitterbal gets its own holiday: National Bitterbal Day

Corona sucks. With the (justified!) tightened restrictions meaning that our social lives are on hold until at least June 1 and we can’t go to our favorite café or restaurant, there’s one piece of news that still makes us a little happy: our good old bitterbal is finally getting the recognition it deserves: its own holiday.

National Bitterbal Day
Ilona de Wit, known on Instagram as the ‘bitterbal queen’, was surprised when she discovered that there was no National Bitterbal Day yet. “The bitterbal is the most popular Dutch drinking snack, one that many countries don’t know at all. It deserves its own ‘day of’.” And now it has one: March 27, 2020.

A little ball of comfort
There’s always room for a bitterbal, and according to beer sommeliers, the cheerful brown little ball is also a perfect beer pairing. But the bitterbal isn’t just delicious. Ilona: “Especially in these times of unrest and uncertainty, the bitterbal offers comfort.” Besides National Bitterbal Day, Ilona has also submitted an application to have the bitterbal registered as intangible cultural heritage with the Knowledge Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands.
A holiday for vegetarians and vegans too
Because celebrating is something you do together! Fortunately, there are plenty of delicious vegetarian bitterballen for sale, such as my personal favorite: the ones from Vegan Junk Food Bar. And despite corona, they’re still operating in Amsterdam and Rotterdam and delivering to your door. Now you know what to stock up on for the 27th!

And if you’d prefer something a little less greasy, pop Kwekkeboom’s vegetarian bitterballen in your Airfryer.
Having drinks together
And make it a party, just like at the pub. With the Houseparty app, you can have drinks together while staying apart. We’re already fans!
