The Grillbikkel is hugely popular: what kind of snack is it (and where can you get one)?

Today is a beautiful day. I’m introducing you to your new favorite snack: the Grillbikkel. Maybe you’re reading this and thinking: but this has been my holy greasy snack for ages! That could very well be the case. The Grillbikkel is steadily gaining ground. In any case, we think this incredible invention in the snack world deserves a platform.

The Grillbikkel is the dream of every sausage and cheese lover, and of anyone who enjoys a greasy (non-vegetarian) bite. It’s a mini grilled sausage filled with fresh cubes of cheese. It may be coated in grilling spices, but it doesn’t have to be. The snack is then deep-fried or prepared in the oven. Grillbikkels are incredibly delicious as a standalone snack with fries, but if we’re to believe the maker, they’re also fantastic on a bread roll. Add a dollop of honey-mustard sauce, mayo or satay sauce and you’ll hardly know what hit your taste buds.

A popular little snack

Are we exaggerating? No. A great many people enjoy the Grillbikkel. Marcel Norder, owner of Snacksalon de Schelp in Roelofarendsveen, developed the snack in collaboration with Keurslagerij van der Meer. When the Grillbikkel received the Met Goud Bekroond quality mark from trade association ProFri, the snack’s popularity grew at lightning speed. Among others, snack bar chain Kwalitaria added it as a seasonal snack. So there’s a good chance you’ve already spotted a Grillbikkel somewhere in a snack bar display.

Last year, no fewer than 100,000 Grillbikkels were sold, and there’s a good chance that number will be surpassed next year. There are some great plans for the Grillbikkel. For example, there’s a plan to make the snack available at a large number of petrol stations next year.

The greasy bite of your dreams

Juicy sausage. Greasy, melted cheese. A spicy crust. Sometimes simply listing the facts is enough to convince you. Beam me up, FavorFlav’s Sharon said already. This is what we want as a Friday afternoon drinks snack, as a sidekick to fries or—go on, be daring—as lunch. You can definitely find one at Snacksalon de Schelp in Roelofarendsveen (which is also very good at loaded fries), but wholesalers Bidfood, Sligro and Hanos also sell the Grillbikkel. And this year, it could well be that you’ll be able to score a Grillbikkel during a visit to a nearby petrol station. Step on the gas with those plans. We can’t wait!
