The spiced cookie croquette is the December hit you’ll want to try
You can take croquettes in all sorts of directions. Besides the classic savory version, you can also buy apple pie croquettes and chocolate croquettes. But have you heard of the spiced cookie croquette? It’s the latest addition to the world of croquettes.
Those who are sweet get… something sweet!
Jeroen Tijl, owner of snack bar de Kruik in Middelharnis, came up with it; he created it especially for Sinterklaas. And yes, this croquette really does have a filling of spiced cookies, with a hint of caramel, wrapped in a crispy coating.
So, what does it taste like?
Delicious! It’s especially scrumptious dipped in chocolate sauce (or Nutella). According to Jeroen, it takes many people a little getting used to. After all, when we think of fried food and croquettes, we quickly think of savory flavors rather than sweet caramel and spiced cookies. So the first bite was a small surprise for me too, but it gets tastier with every bite. The spiced cookie croquette has since been named the Sinterklaas snack of 2020 and is just as big a hit as the croquette letter.
Chocolate sauce or mustard?
At first, the spiced cookie croquette was created for the local Sinterklaas celebration, but it seems that it’s going to be rolled out nationwide now that it has also reached several cities. People are coming to the snack bar from all over the country to get their hands on a spiced cookie croquette for December 5. According to Jeroen, the croquette is best enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea. And what sauce should you have with it? “Caramel or chocolate. Definitely not mustard!” says Jeroen. For now, anyone who wants to try the croquette will have to travel to snack bar de Kruik or Restaria de Brabander in Amerongen, where it can be ordered for just one euro until December 5.
