These are the 7 most notable TikTok food trends of 2024

TikTok remains THE place where foodies around the world discover and share new trends. From unexpected flavor combinations to completely reinvented classics, TikTok never fails to surprise us. This year again, a number of remarkable viral dishes are on the menu that you can try making at home or hunt for the next time you go grocery shopping. These trends have not only racked up millions of views, but also piqued our curiosity. Here are 7 of the most notable food trends you’ll want to know about.

What do a cucumber, pistachio chocolate and pickle juice have in common? They made 2024 a memorable FoodTok year. From bizarre combinations to culinary masterpieces, these TikTok trends conquered our kitchens and our hearts over the past year. We’ve listed seven major FoodTok trends in the Netherlands from the past year for you.
TikTok food trends in 2024
1. Cola with pickle juice
Perhaps the most unusual trend we’ve seen over the past year: cola with pickle juice. Thanks to none other than Dua Lipa, this trend went viral. It may sound strange, but pickle juice in cola gives it a surprising sour twist that many TikTokers appreciate. Although it wasn’t to everyone’s taste, this drink—with 10.9 million views!—still deserves a place among the most notable trends of 2024. Pickles are an ingredient we’re seeing more and more often anyway, such as in the chocogurk or oliebollen with pickle. It therefore seems only a matter of time before new products with pickles go viral. Cheese with pickles, perhaps?

2. Sushi sandwich
Sushi, but in sandwich form: the sushi sandwich makes sushi even easier to eat on the go. With a crispy exterior of fried nori and a savory filling of rice, fish or avocado, this trend is ideal for anyone who loves convenience and flavor. Not only did the hype continue to grow, creating long FoodTok lines at hotspots such as Rolling Sushi, but TikTok creators also experimented extensively with ingredients and shared their own creations. This trend has led to a genuine movement, meaning the Sushi Sandwich can now be found on every menu.

3. Cucumber salad
TikToker Logan Moffitt, better known as ‘the cucumber guy’, took the simple cucumber salad to new heights with his spicy version. His variation with chili flakes, soy sauce and garlic prompted people around the world—including us—to make their own version of this crisp, refreshing salad. With his cucumber salad, he created a global craze, with countless imitations and nearly sixteen million views. This trend caused everyone to buy cucumbers in bulk, even leading to cucumber shortages in supermarkets.

4. Crispy Rice Salad
This crispy rice salad combines textures like no other: soft rice is transformed into a crispy delight in the pan. Combined with fresh vegetables and a spicy dressing, it’s a surprising meal that fits perfectly among the viral TikTok recipes. Add your own twist with some avocado or salmon!
@kalejunkie *NEW* CRISPY RICE CUCUMBER SALAD WITH LEMON TAHINI DRESSING and omgahhhhh perhaps this is one of my best combos of 2024, which is saying a lot! I have been seeing crispy rice salads floating around and as a gal that loves maximum crunch and texture, I had to create my own version. It is a WINNER. A party in your mouth that will have you swooning over this one and making it on repeat. Makes 4 large servings or 6 smaller Crispy Rice 2 cups cooked rice, cooled (I used jasmine rice) 2 tsp soy sauce 2 tb chili crisp/crunch (Trader Joe’s makes a good one, l used Momofuku this time!) 1 tb sesame oil Salad 5 Persian cucumbers, thinly sliced (or 1 large English cucumber) 1 cup edamame, shelled 1 bunch green onions, thinly sliced (3/4 cup) 1 bunch fresh mint, chopped (1/2 cup) 2 avocados, chopped 1 cup salted peanuts, finely chopped Lemon Tahini Dressing 1/2 cup olive oil 1/3 cup lemon juice (this is 1-2 lemons) 3 tb tahini 11/2 to maple syrup 2 cloves garlic, mashed 1 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp kosher salt 3/4 tsp ground black pepper First, prepare the crispy rice topping. Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Add cooked and cooled rice to the baking sheet. Toss well with the soy sauce, chili crisp and sesame oil. Bake for 30-40 minutes, tossing half way through. Remove from the oven once the rice is crispy and set aside. Next, chop/slice all of the ingredients for the salad and add to a large bowl. Last, make the dressing. Whisk to together all of the ingredients for the dressing. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Pour dressing over the salad. Add the crispy rice last, toss and enjoy! #salad #saladrecipes #crispyrice #crispyricesalad ♬ original sound – Nicole K. Modic
5. Dubai chocolate bar
This luxurious snack bar from Dubai, made with chocolate, pistachio and künefe, was a genuine hit this year. In fact, the combination of creamy chocolate and crunchy pistachio is THE culinary hit of 2024. What began with a TikTok video by an influencer from Dubai grew into an international sensation. In the Netherlands, bakeries such as De Bonte Koe saw orders skyrocket, especially after Monica Geuze tried the bar. This chocolate bar has even spawned a version with a typically Dutch twist: the Dubai oliebol.

6. Upside-down pineapple
Although this trend isn’t directly edible, it has everything to do with food. If you put an upside-down pineapple in your shopping cart, you’re sending a secret flirting message. This funny, slightly cheeky code has taken TikTok by storm. Who knew grocery shopping could be so exciting? Jumbo came up with its own version of it.
@digital.nomad.infoForget dating apps—people in Spain are finding love at the supermarket! Show up at Mercadona from 7-8pm with an upside-down pineapple in your cart to signal you’re looking. Would you try it? 💘 tt: lilmayer_music marinabarrial #Digitalnomad #SupermarketDating #Mercadona♬ original sound – Digital Nomad Info
7. Lazy Girl Dinner
The trend #girldinner went viral on TikTok last year and initially focused on eating simple, often unhealthy meals, such as snacks or leftovers from the fridge. It was a response to the (social) pressure of making ‘perfect’ meals and instead embraced convenience. This year, #lazygirldinner followed. The idea is similar—easy, quick meals—but with an emphasis on healthy and nutritious ingredients.
@oliviaadriance LAZY GIRL’S ULTIMATE CHICKEN THIGHS✨the best and easiest chicken thighs you’ll ever make! We make these at least once a week and I have turned SO many people on to this recipe. They are sure to become a staple in your house! Ingredients: (quantities are easily modifiable to serve however many are in your fam 🫶🏻) 1.5 lbs of chicken thighs, boneless and skinless salt and pepper to season about 1/2 cup of bone broth (start with 1/4 cup and add more as needed) Directions: Heat a skillet over medium high heat While the skillet heats up, season your chicken thighs generously with salt and pepper Add your chicken thighs to the dry skillet, making sure they are not crowded, and cook, undisturbed, for 10-12 minutes or until they appear almost cooked through. Its important not to move them around while cooking because you want a nice crust to form. Flip the chicken and cook for another 5 minutes Turn the temperature to medium low and add your chicken broth, scraping up the chicken bits as the broth deglazes the pan Allow the sauce to reduce until there is only a thin glaze over the bottom of the pan, tossing the chicken in the sauce as you go Serve and ENJOY! FoodTok
#FoodTok, which now has 3,600,000 videos, influenced not only what we ate this year, but also how we traveled. The #snacklebox offers convenience during road trips and long flights, while sharing local treats from shops such as 7/11 inspired people to discover local snacks. Through TikTok, travelers discovered unfamiliar dishes, such as the picklewich in New York and Japanese #tanghulu, fruit on a stick covered in sugar.
