As far as we’re concerned, fish fingers don’t get enough attention. We even wrote an ode to them once, but nevertheless, we have to give ourselves a talking-to; we eat this crispy, fishy snack far too little. Time to bring them home again. Of course, we want to do it properly, so the question is: where can you buy the very best fish fingers? Snackspert has the definitive answer.
We know: you can also easily make fish fingers yourself. As with everything, that is of course the absolute tastiest option. But we simply don’t have the time (and don’t always feel like it either) to roll up our sleeves ourselves. In that case, the only effort we want to make is opening the freezer and switching on the oven, air fryer or stove. Frozen fish fingers for the win , then.
These are the best fish fingers from the supermarket
Six types of frozen fish fingers are included in the test: those from Albert Heijn, Iglo, Aldi, Vismarine (available at Dirk, Plus and more supermarkets), Jumbo and Lidl. What is the final top six, and what is Snackspert’s verdict?
1. Vismarine: good flavour, nice and crispy.
2. Aldi: pretty good. Tasty, and well salted too. Great.
3. Albert Heijn: just okay. Not much salt, but nice and crispy.
4. Jumbo: comparable to Albert Heijn, but slightly less crispy.
5. Iglo: really strange. They taste as if there’s soap in them; that’s odd, isn’t it?
6. Lidl: really not good. Tasteless.
What stands out to us: Iglo?! In fifth place? You wouldn’t expect that from an A-brand, would you? Charging full price and still failing to shine in a taste test like this. Still, we’re not all that surprised either. Earlier taste tests by Snackspert had already shown that A-brands aren’t necessarily the winners. That was the case, for example, with garlic sauces and paprika-ridged crisps (with Lay’s firmly at the bottom!). Conclusion: don’t be tempted by familiar brands, attractive packaging or spectacular advertisements. Just trust Snackspert’s verdict.

And that verdict says you should stock up on Vismarine frozen fish fingers. You can get them at Dirk, Plus, Vomar and SPAR, among others, for around €2.50 per box of approximately 450 grams. Oh, I really want some now. Delicious on a bread roll with a generous dollop of ravigote sauce. Or with an AVG meal with fried potatoes and tinned peas and carrots. Yes, you can see it: fish fingers bring back childhood memories. And that’s exactly why they deserve a permanent place in your freezer.
