This Sandwich Outshines the Kapsalon and Is a Massive Hit

Word of mouth has long been far from enough if you want to sell a successful snack. No, you need to go viral on social media. Just look at the Bolusbar, which Monica Geuze praised to the heavens: its creator is now working overtime. The same thing happened with the Koet sandwich from snack bar ‘t Geveltje in Streefkerk. Eke Bosman—also known as Snackspert—is absolutely thrilled about the sandwich, and now the Bankzitters also want to stop by to try it. What makes the Koet sandwich so good?

These days, snack bars and producers are coming up with the most original and remarkable things. Do you remember the kruidnoten fries that were a hit in December? And how many times has the frikandel undergone an innovation? The Koet sandwich fits perfectly into this lineup.
A Kapsalon, but Different
Fong Yang, owner of snack bar ‘t Geveltje, is the creator of the Koet sandwich. He is not the originator, though. He gives those credits to a player from VV Streefkerk, the local football club. The footballer wanted a sandwich with lettuce, fries, shawarma, a cheese soufflé and garlic sauce. Essentially a variation on the kapsalon, but in a sandwich. And so it was done. By now, Fong Yang has made a few minor adjustments to the sandwich. The Koet sandwich is now made with a pita, with a generous dollop of sambal added.
One more change: the sandwich is now a permanent fixture on the menu at ‘t Geveltje. Whereas at first only the occasional person dared to take on the calorie bomb, the place is now packed. It will only get busier—especially when YouTube sensation De Bankzitters stops by soon.
A Serious Calorie Bomb
A little more about the term ‘calorie bomb’, because there is no exaggeration there. Anyone eating this sandwich needs to have a) an empty stomach, b) an iron stomach and c) good health insurance. You can easily consume around 1,900 kilocalories.
Snackspert gives the Koet sandwich 4 out of 5 stars. He calls it ”a banger”, although he found the fries ”quickly tasteless and limp” and thought the garlic sauce could have been fresher. Snackspert’s followers particularly couldn’t get over the calorie bomb itself. ”I’m going to schedule my angioplasty now”, ”If you eat this, you should be legally required to cover all your own healthcare costs” and ”Immediate cardiac arrest afterwards” were among the reactions to his video.
It’s an abomination of a sandwich, Fong Yang says about his own creation to RTV Rijnmond. And you’re probably a bit of an abomination yourself if you’re covered in sauce and grease—we think. The Koet sandwich is not exactly easy to eat. But delicious? Absolutely. The Bankzitters will find that out soon enough.
