What is Raspatat and where in Amsterdam can you get it?

Connoisseurs know: nothing beats a good portion of Raspatat. Some – like our beloved Nick Toet – find Raspatat even tastier than regular fries. Because no, it isn’t the same as the fries you probably usually eat. We’ll tell you what it is and where you can get it in Amsterdam.

By the way, have you noticed that ‘Raspatat’ is written with a capital letter? That’s right; ‘RAS’ are the initials of the Brit who ‘invented’ potato powder. And we’ve already revealed the most important ingredient of Raspatat. Potato powder!
Raspatat recipe
So there’s a big difference from ‘regular’ fries. Those are made from sliced potatoes, which are then deep-fried. Raspatat is basically made by mixing ground potatoes (potato powder, that is) with water. We like Nick Toet’s Raspatat recipe best. It involves mixing potato powder with hot water, milk, cornflour, egg and salt.
Creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside
Snack bars usually have a special Raspatat machine that cuts the Raspatat into equal pieces. The cut Raspatat then goes into the deep fryer. There, it is fried until golden brown. What is typical of the flavour of this particularly delicious snack? A creamy inside and a crispy outside. Raspatat is so delicious in terms of flavour and texture that it’s a shame that nowadays it is so difficult to find.
Buying Raspatat in Amsterdam
Yep, you have to work pretty hard to find a snack bar that makes Raspatat. Raspatat is a bit of a nostalgic thing. That’s why the younger generation is less familiar with it. Still, it’s not impossible to get your hands on Raspatat. In Amsterdam, for example, you can get it at:
- Snackbar Babo in De Pijp (Van Woustraat 93). There, you can get a bowl of Raspatat with mayo for about € 3.50.
- Snackbar ‘t Centrum (Haarlemmerplein 4). Raspatat with various toppings (around € 4.50).
- De Corner Inn in Oud-West (Kinkerstraat 86) was our favourite place for a bowl of Raspatat for a long time, but it is temporarily closed. Hopefully it will reopen soon!
- The same goes for Snackbar Aggie (Tweede Goudsbloemdwarsstraat 23).
Snack of oblivion
Let’s hope we can soon get Raspatat in more places because, people, it’s really hard to understand why this snack has faded into obscurity. Raspatat = life! Do you know of any places in your neighbourhood where they have this nostalgic snack on the menu? We’d love to hear from you!
