10x food that’s disgustingly delicious #16

Port salut

As cool as we can sometimes act about food, we all have a soft spot for things that are disgusting and delicious at the same time. These are our editorial team’s ten favorites du jour. Disgusting or disgustingly delicious? You decide!

Blackcurrant cordial with cola

One and one makes two (times as delicious), you might think about many things, but honestly, this one had never occurred to us. We had only just got used to cola with red wine, after all, and we say no to cola with milk. But accidentally, because cola was poured into a glass that still contained blackcurrant cordial and then accidentally drunk (so many coincidences!), this turned out to be a combination now considered worth repeating! Blackcurrant cordial with cola, guys—we think you saw it here first. Right, Lauretta…?

Olives with pesto

Yes, in this section we naturally always find ourselves in territory where people can also say, ‘What do you mean disgusting? That’s simply indisputably delicious!’ So go ahead, tell us about… olives with pesto! Sharon doesn’t buy them herself, but sometimes they appear in front of her and then there’s no stopping her. Two workhorses of Italian cuisine, but does that really mean you should put them together in a bowl? So far, we haven’t seen any encouraging messages about this from Italians. And can we at least have a laugh at the text on the packaging? ‘To help you get started, the pit has already been removed’—hahaha, what a helpful start?

Dry instant noodles

Yes, just like that—crack them into pieces as a snack. Why would it be any unhealthier than crisps? Fried wheat, fried potato—who cares. And it may surprise you, but it actually takes some comparative product testing too. Some uncooked noodles (IndoMie) are very boring. You really do have to cook those with their spice mix, that much is clear. But others (YumYum shrimp!) are already seasoned (separately from the sachet that comes with them), and a little thinner, and even crunchier. How do I know? Erm…

Port Salut

Another case that masses of people will say is simply delicious, end of story. Fair enough! But if you really focus on that orange rind-that-isn’t-a-rind, and sit down properly for that wonderful factory-like texture and smell… then Port Salut fits very well into both categories, doesn’t it? Sure, we’ll head back to the cheese jeweler tomorrow, but for now we’re happy to enjoy it with that brie from disgustingly delicious #3 on a plate of Melba toasts—we’re ready.

Pasta with no-sauce sauce

Ultimate comfort food for times when life is ALREADY COMPLICATED ENOUGH, OKAY?! You do not want to think about sauce, not even about olive oil and garlic. And chili pepper. That’s already too much, okay?! You want to be left alone. With a plate of thoroughly cooked pasta, because to hell with your perfect al dente today. You don’t want to have to chew that hard either. You just want soft pasta. With NOTHING. Sniff.

Crunchy snacks with herb cream cheese

Yesss, it’s another real rollercoaster of extremes here, because from pasta with nothing we suddenly move on to spicy crunchy snacks with herb cream cheese: madhouse! Bam, what flavors! Spicy, orange-red chemical rice crackers (bring on the ammonium caramel E150c, woohoo!) that you have to drag one by one through the cheapest tub of herb cream cheese you can find!

Serrano and cream cheese rolls

Disgusting? Disgusting? Loads of people will say they’re absolutely delicious! Yes, they have a point. But when you buy three tubs because the ‘tapas’ deal happens to be three for however many euros, and you have absolutely no desire to vary things up (with pesto olives, for example), and then steadily work your way through all three tubs one after the other, they do become a little disgusting. But hey, you can’t stop. Because tub 1 is empty, then you went to cook (just like Sabina), and then you thought, ‘Well, just one more roll from the fridge while I’m cooking. And another one. And now really just one more’…

Smoked sausage sandwich

According to our beloved Adeline, the Broodje Unox, naturally with Calvé Broodje Unox Saus, is the ultimate in disgustingly delicious happiness. And naturally we immediately tipped Adeline off about the HEMA hot dog (from disgustingly delicious #3 once again!), because it’s a personal match and because of the fantastic hot dog sauce they sell separately!

Pea soup from a pouch or can

A nice segue from smoked sausage to Wieke’s pea soup tip! To fit into this category and shine, it naturally has to come from a pouch or can; you can make it yourself another time if you want to impress people with Joris Bijdendijk’s snert. In this case: none of that. Canned is of course actually even better than from a pouch, because with a pouch you usually don’t get that characteristic ‘plonk’ when the soup falls into the pan all at once like a rubber block. Bonus points for that.

Pancakes with spreadable cheese

Absolutely—family members of culinary editors naturally also come up with tips of immeasurable value. We had to bow down to this ‘sister of’ (Lauretta), who, in times of true need (for guilty pleasures), used to spread her pancake with spreadable cheese. Spreadable cheese, let me say that one more time. And when it’s a real celebration: ketchup or sambal on top! Take a bow, Baarends family!
