Genius or taking it too far? The frikandel americain (and how to make it)

broodje-frikandel-americain

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a filet americain sandwich every now and then. (As long as you make it yourself—you’ll want to leave those plastic supermarket tubs on the shelf.) Add some onions and maybe a gherkin, and you’ve got yourself a lunch fit for royalty. When it comes to frikandel americain, though, I have my doubts. Yes, you read that right: frikandel americain.

So that’s—indeed—filet americain, but made with frikandel. As if we hadn’t already been thrown for a loop enough this year by things like gherkins in chocolate letters and armpit sushi.

Everything with frikandel

Still, it doesn’t surprise us. In recent years, we’ve seen so many frikandel innovations. It seems you can do just about anything with the deep-fried meat stick. Just to name a few:

I could go on for a while, but I think you’d still be scrolling tomorrow. For frikandel fans, this is obviously good news. I count myself among them, but I’m still not entirely sure about frikandel americain. Is it the unappetizing color that reminds me of a visit to the bathroom? Is it the mindfuck of seeing it ground into a smooth paste? I don’t know. But frikandel has surprised me before, so I’m going into this with an open mind.

How to make frikandel americain

One positive thing, at least, is that you don’t need much to make frikandel americain. Haven’t my reservations about this snack put you off? Here’s how to make it: first, deep-fry about six frikandels. Cut them into pieces and put them in a blender, together with a generous dollop of mayo, plenty of curry sauce, and some salt, pepper, and paprika. Blend until smooth. Next, slice open a bread roll and spread it with the frikandel americain. To finish, add a few slices of boiled egg, finely chopped onion, and some extra salt and pepper.

The end result: a frikandel americain sandwich.

Fun to put on the Christmas brunch table this year? Or would you prefer something a little more sophisticated? You could also try the festive frikandel with langoustine mayonnaise and caviar. A beloved party snack meets luxury—always a winning combination.
