Thirsty tales

Surprising or not: this is the world’s most popular beer brand

Have you recovered yet from the surprise that neither McDonald’s nor Burger King is the world’s most popular fast-food chain, but Kentucky Fried Chicken? Perhaps the result of which beer brand the same can be said of is a little less shocking…

And on top of that, this might give you a bit of an orange feeling. Or green!

Bright and clear around the world

Because it’s none other than Dutch Heineken that the average beer drinker rushes to the store (or the pub) for. Just as the British Business Financing illustrated using Google data that KFC’s fried-chicken offerings are searched for the most worldwide on average, the same is true of Heineken. Business Financing looks at how many countries a particular brand is the most popular in; the more countries, the higher it ranks.

Differences are a good thing

There are, of course, major regional differences, which is why the ranking looks at the total number of countries in which each brand is the most popular. In North America, that brand is Budweiser—a brand that is available for purchase here in the Netherlands, but that you don’t often come across in large quantities at parties. (Or perhaps at the parties I don’t attend, but I personally don’t know anyone who has ever filled their balcony with crates of Budweiser.)

Not always a home game

What’s remarkable is that, according to Business Financing, beer brands are strongly associated with their country of origin, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the most popular beer in their home country. Guinness, which earns second place on the list because it is the most popular beer brand in no fewer than 22 countries, comes from Ireland. But which beer brand is the most popular in Ireland itself? Brew Dog. From Scotland.

Beer map of the world

Heineken therefore proudly tops this list, with a huge lead over the number two. In 77 (!) countries around the world, Heineken is the most popular beer brand. Knowing that this may cause indignation among some of you, we’ll say it anyway: cheers!

And below, you can see a colorful map created by Business Financing showing which beer brands are the most popular where.
