This is the winner of the Dutch Frikandel-Eating Championship (and how many he ate…)

frikandellen

At FavorFlav’s editorial office, you’ll find plenty of loyal frikandel fans, and judging by the many reactions we always get to frikandel articles, that’s a pretty good cross-section of society. You lot really love them! (But don’t let that give you any ideas.) Still, we doubt whether we personally know anyone who could come close to the number eaten by the winner of the Dutch Frikandel-Eating Championship recently.

Because 55-year-old Aart van de Streek from ’t Harde recently won this eating competition. The runner-up came second after having to give up at 19, but Aart carried on and became Dutch Champion by polishing off no fewer than 23 frikandellen.

Ploughing on

The winner did admit that things got difficult around frikandel number 16, because by then they had started to become rather dry and tasteless. Fortunately for Aart, he found relief in the sauces corner. Mayonnaise didn’t work—it was too greasy. But applesauce proved to be his salvation, allowing him to “plough on” until number 23 had been thoroughly devoured. (Can we have a bucket?)

Back on the horse

What did this frikandel champion win? The title, of course, and a trophy featuring a golden frikandel. You can’t eat that, naturally, so according to AD, the deep fryer was switched back on at Aart’s home the very next day. “It’s like driving a car,” he said. “If you’ve had an accident, you have to get back behind the wheel as soon as possible.” (HAHAHAHA!)

Goal achieved

Aart is determined to take part in next year’s edition again, but he doesn’t need to win anymore. His goal has been achieved, he says, and now he’s happy to leave the honour to someone else. So if this has inspired you, you may want to start training. With a high frikandel, perhaps?
