You can now buy limoncello oliebollen
We’ve barely taken the oliedellen out of the fryer when a new oliebol appears on the horizon. And it’s another one to absolutely devour! Because this time it’s not filled with a frikandel, but with limoncello! The limoncello oliebol — doesn’t it immediately make your mouth water?
Limoncello is our favorite after-dinner drink. But the yellow lemon liqueur is also delicious in a cocktail, madeleines, ice pops, cheese and Italian babàs. So why not in an oliebol? That’s exactly what Wendy Knubben of the Nieuwe Ommoordseweg pastry stall in Rotterdam wondered.
Oliebol x LimonGERSo
An oliebol combined with traditionally made limoncello — or actually LimonGERSo, created by Jeroen Ballot in 2015. That sounds like music to our ears. LimonGERSo has a lot in common with the classic limoncello we know, but is just a little different. With 36% alcohol, LimonGERSo is slightly stronger than the classic version.
Drunken balls
Wendy got the idea of baking oliebollen with LimonGERSo from an acquaintance who suggested the combination. So after Jeroen dropped off one of his bottles, Wendy immediately started experimenting. “That was a cheerful start to the day. The first oliebol still contained too much limoncello. When I tasted it, it was quite intense. I could definitely feel the alcohol going down.” Wendy tells AD.
Oliecello or limonbol?
After a few test versions, the oliebol with LimonGERSo was finally ready. A few lucky ones were allowed to taste the oliebol — correction: LimonGERSo ball. The verdict, in true Rotterdam style: ‘f***ing delicious!’. Other pastry-stall owners have since also announced that they want to sell the new oliebol. We’re already coming up with an easier name for this boozy deep-fried treat. How about oliecello? Or would you prefer limonbol? May the most popular name win!
