Ah, Christmas: that wonderful time of year to spend some time with yourself and your loved ones. To really go all out. Well, that doesn’t apply to everyone. Some people serve their guests nuggets, pasta without sauce or pizza at Christmas. No, you really don’t want to spend Christmas with these people….
Last December, the British newspaper Daily Star wondered what the average Brit would serve on their festively laid table and asked people to send in photos of their Christmas dinner via Twitter. They came to regret that, because the photos on Twitter looked nothing like the beautiful images in the December supermarket magazines or the cookbooks by Nigella, Jamie Oliver or Yotam Ottolenghi.

Overcooked broccoli
Even if you love the food your mother makes for you, chances are the internet will be slightly less enthusiastic. That was certainly the case with this honest photo. The classic pigs in blankets, meaning cocktail sausages wrapped in a slice of bacon, a roast, fried potatoes and some overcooked broccoli were mercilessly mocked. ‘Where’s the gravy?’ many people responded to the unadorned meat. But the baguette with herb butter on the edge of the plate received the most criticism: however delicious it may be, it doesn’t belong here, according to Twitter.
Torn Christmas napkin
Yorkshire puddings (those hollow bread rolls), baked beans and a little ketchup: not a vegetable in sight in this Christmas dinner. Something white can also be seen in the top right; it’s unrecognisable, but perhaps it’s white bread? Boiled chicken breast? Or a torn Christmas napkin? Twitter’s verdict was brutal: ‘A crime against humanity, this Christmas dinner.’
Don’t get too jealous
On plate number three there is pasta, a few potatoes and some kind of meat. An eclectic combination, but the person who took the photo is still excited: ‘Don’t get too jealous’. The only good news: there are bacon-wrapped sausages again, although they have been fried a very dark brown—you might say: burnt.
Forget the traditional roast, roulade or turkey—there are dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets on the Christmas plate. Alongside a slice of pizza (look at the top right), fried potatoes, rice and a chicken curry. Reactions online: ‘Did you have to throw up? That’s what it looks like,’ and: ‘Maybe you can get yourself adopted.’ What’s on the pizza? Well, well!
Sausages after all?
Plenty of inspiration for Christmas dinner? Probably no pizza, baked beans in tomato sauce or chicken nuggets, but those sausages with a slice of bacon wrapped around them are wildly popular at Christmas…
