6 incomprehensible barbecue products from the supermarket

We’ve known for ages that there are countless incomprehensible supermarket products. Products for lazy people, people who don’t understand what marketing is, or products we simply don’t understand at all. What turns out? The barbecue season delivers a few gems too!

Strawberry – marshmallow – skewer
You read that right. 1 skewer with both marshmallows and strawberries on it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of roasting marshmallows over an open fire, but I understand this one a little less. First of all, this is for the barbecue. If you put this skewer on the barbecue after grilling some delicious meat on it, it will firstly become a mess and secondly you can expect a third aftertaste. But above all: even if you hold this over an open fire (like any normal person), won’t your strawberries become completely soft, limp and warm? Or you’ll have unmelted marshmallows. HOW DOES THIS WORK?!

Pineapple – caramel – stick
Pineapple on the barbecue, I’m all for it. Delicious on your burger! Jumbo’s idea of pouring caramel sauce over it is great too. But dear Jumbo, you can’t sell me on paying €3 for a few pathetic, not-fresh pieces of pineapple – and getting a pre-mixed microscopic sachet of caramel sauce with it. People, how many times do I have to say it: buy a whole pineapple, make the best caramel sauce of your life yourself and make everyone at your barbecue very happy. Jumbo, thanks for the good idea. Unfortunately, it was executed terribly.
Metchup
A good barbecue obviously calls for a good sauce. A smoky BBQ sauce; incorporate sriracha into your grilling afternoon; or make delicious Lebanese garlic sauce… The point is: dare to be creative with your sauces. And creative, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly what the makers of Metchup have not been. Just ask snackspert.

Corn lollipops
I hate things that aren’t things. And Jumbo’s corn “lollipops” are a perfect example of that. Dear Mr or Ms Jumbo, I don’t know what kind of lollipops you used to get from your parents, but if they were lollipops made of corn then I’m afraid your parents didn’t love you. A lollipop is candy on a stick that you lick and suck until it’s gone or until your teeth fall out. Corn isn’t. Stop pretending. And besides, in the same store you can buy the same amount of corn for 80 cents less. But yes, that’s just corn; not a lollipop.
Potato salad
Far from unimportant at your barbecue: good salads. And the classic is of course a delicious, creamy, freshly made potato salad. Make plenty extra, because at a barbecue everyone is always eagerly reaching for that potato salad. Grilled meat with creamy mayo potatoes is an ideal combination, after all. And no, we’re not talking about the tiny Albert Heijn little potato salad packed with E-numbers and added sugars. According to Albert Heijn, this “salad” is a must at a good barbecue. Appie, let’s agree to disagree.
