How to organize a SUSHI PARTY at home!

Sushi party

Organizing a dinner party at home is great fun, but sometimes you simply don’t have the energy to spend hours in the kitchen preparing a 4-course deluxe dinner. And luckily, you really don’t have to. Because a fries table, nacho table or hotpot is super easy, wonderfully sociable and delicious. Just like a sushi party! And here’s how to organize one:

Every sushi starts with good sushi rice and nori sheets. Cooking rice for sushi is more difficult than boiling potatoes, but easier than baking bread. Especially with these handy tips from Tim Anderson of Vegan JapanEasy. By the way, did you know that sushi rice isn’t actually a type of rice, but Japanese rice that is seasoned specifically for making sushi? You can simply buy nori sheets at the supermarket or an Asian grocery store.

The filling

Then there’s the filling. You can go in any direction with that. The best-known type of filling is the one used in California Rolls, with surimi and avocado. But tuna and salmon are also two types of fish you often see in sushi. You can also make your own Ebi Fried Tempura version with homemade breaded and deep-fried shrimp. A Japanese omelet (tamago), crispy chicken, spicy tuna salad or eel is also delicious in it. Prefer vegan sushi? No problemo!

Ready? Start rolling!

Before the sushi party begins, make sure you’ve already cut everything and put it in cheerful Japanese bowls, so you can also enjoy your sake without cooking stress during the evening. Have you also put out soy sauce, Kewpie mayonnaise, ginger and wasabi? Then you’re all set, which means: start rolling! The easiest option is to have everyone make their own hand roll (temaki) — and with these tips from the experts, it’ll be a breeze.
