Rare corona eating habit: snacking in the car

Since all-things-stupid-with-a-C (corona/COVID-19), and especially since hospitality lockdown number two, I’ve developed a strange habit: apparently, I eat in the car very often. So let’s hope the hospitality industry opens again soon (in any case!), so I can leave this weird routine behind me.

Back in the day, you’d simply stop somewhere that sold something you were craving, and often you could easily sit down there for a while. Remember? Just order an uitsmijter and an orange juice at a table or something, or a big bowl of steaming ramen noodles. Yes, that was a long time ago, wasn’t it… And now everything is different.
Saving what can be saved
Now I’m very keen to make sure my favorite hospitality businesses don’t go under, so I’m definitely getting food from outside more often. (I also do more grocery shopping than I used to, so where is all of this going – oh wait, corona kilos, of course.) But a requirement for corona comfort food is often that it’s still hot (because comfort), so you quickly end up with pizza slices, burgers, the best toasted sandwiches, etc. And of course I can jump on my bike and schlep through the city for forty minutes to get somewhere, but on the way back..?? Then everything will be cold!
And that’s where the car comes in. So I sit in the car with my haul before some disgusting pigeon can dig its knobbed feet and beak into my goodies, or the rain can drown my beautiful sandwich. Embarrassing, I know, and I do know perfectly well that this needs to stop as soon as possible.
Pack it up, please
What have I scored in my modest little car over the past two weeks? That brilliant fried chicken burger from Naskip. A pizza slice (okay, several) from Europizza in Amsterdam-Noord. The hot dog toasted sandwich from Paindemie. Sushi from the local Japanese restaurant. And there’s plenty more on the to-eat list; all delicious sandwiches from entrepreneurs I want to help save from going under. Until it becomes my own downfall, of course!
Here are the photos. Not pictured: the sushi. Because do you have any idea how incredibly risky it is to tear open a little bag of soy sauce in a car and then balance the soy sauce in a small space without any flat surfaces, in a plastic lid?! I really didn’t have any hands left. And now I’m very curious about your strange corona eating habits!
